Erupted wisdom tooth. Coloured pan-oral X-ray of the mouth of a young adult, showing an erupted wisdom tooth. The wisdom tooth, highlighted in orange, is seen in the lower jaw (at right). It is growing slightly skew. At left in the lower jaw is a molar tooth (orange), beside which a wisdom tooth on this side of the mouth has not yet erupted. Adults usually have four wisdom teeth (known as third molars), one each in the rearmost region of the upper and lower jaws. In some people, however, not all wisdom teeth emerge. Typically they erupt between the ages of 17 and 21. A pan-oral X-ray provides a view of all the teeth in the mouth.
