This connects with the tracks in the shop near by. Acrane spans the engine room, and machinery can be picked upfrom the cars by the crane and delivered anywhere in the en-gine room. The transformers were originally installed in thebasement of the main power house building near the switch-board. Because of fire risk and dampness, it was decided toplace them in a separate building, and a two-story building was 1072 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. [Vol. XXIV. No. MAIN POWER STATION erected, as shown. This transformer househas transformers on the lower floor, with arailroad track running through the centeraisle. On the second floor are the high-tensionswitches, lightning arresters and static inter-rupters. In all, there are seven and one-thirdsets of transformers, five for the 15,000-voltlines, and two and one-third for the 30,000-^.rolt lines. The insulators for the 30,000-voltlines were all tested by the company. Forthis purpose a 100,000-volt transformer capa-ble of giving varying pressures was used. Thecompleted appearance of some of these engi-neering features, of which drawings havebeen given. *is shown by the accompanyingphotographs.
