The churchwhere this patriotic family worshipped and which wasbuilt in 1()!)7 was burned in 1814. but was replaced by asmall stone-marle building on the original site. The oldbell of the earlier church bearing the inscription, Countyof York. \irginia, , was jjreserved and is still in use. THE MOORE HOUSE About tliree-(|uarters of a mile out of Yorktown, upon Temple Farm. stands the Moore House where the. Moimi; hi)l:>i;, nkau vcjUKrowx surrender of Cornwallis was drawn up and signed. Theroom made forever famous by this epoch-making agree-ment is still pointed out. The house is a very old oneandis i)robably part of the residence of Colonel George Ludlow YORKTOWN 39 (1596-1656), member of the Colonial Council, who was akinsman of the English regicide, Etlmund , and ismentioned by him in his memoirs. Standing within a greenlawn on a hold bluff of York River, the long, dormer-window farm-house makes a charming picture. An interesting bit of history connected with TempleFarm is found in the fact that just about this site stood,more than a hundred years before the Revolution, the homeof Captain Nicholas ^Martahi (1591-1657), ancestor ofGeneral Washington and General Nelson and one of theleading spirits in the first rebellion against tyranny inVirginia, when, in 1634, the Colonists thrust the un-popular Governor, Sir John Harvey, out of olll
