He entered the service of thePennsylvania Railroad Company as Apprenticeat the Altoona Shops, in 1868, and subsequentlywas employed as Draughtsman and in charge ofengineering work. Soon after the lease of the United Railroads ofNew Jersey to the Pennsylvania Railroad, was transferred to that division, servingin various capacities, principally as Train Masteron the New York Division, until 1881, when hewas appointed Superintendent of the SunburyDivision, Philadelphia and Erie Railroad.
