The stone circles of Senegambia at Wassu are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stones are believed to date from 300 BCE to the 1600s. Little is known about the people who created the circles. They are believed to be burial sites. The stones at Wassu are laterite, a reddish, iron rich metamorphic rock created by tropical conditions, found in a local quarry. Small stone on top of the standing stones are recent and are placed there as offerings. Janjangbureh, The Republic of the Gambia.
