Pot-Grown versus Layer Plants Potted plants may appear expensive, yet when the labor necessary to grow them into proper condition and the time saved in the result of the crop are considered, they will be found much cheaper than ordinary layer plants. They may be planted after a crop of early sum- mer vegetables has been harvested, and a crop of fruit secured in eight to ten months after planting. Layer Plants A full list of layer plants will be given in our Autumn Cata- logue, which we issue in September. They are not so desirable as pot-grown plants, and will not produce as large a crop of fruit next spring ; but they are cheaper and more available for extensive plant- ing. Under proper autumn treatment they produce quite satisfactory results. A " layer'' strawberry plant is one that has taken root by its own effort, whereas a " pot-grown'' plant, having all the fine fibrous roots confined in the pot, is not checked in growth by transplanting.
