Male great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) swimming
The species is known as either warty newt, northern crested newt or, most commonly, great crested newt. In breeding condition, as here, the male can be easily distinguished by the crest running along the back of the head, and the silver flash in the tail. Also visible in this picture are the black spots on the yellow belly, the pattern of which is unique to each individual. As individuals can be recognised, it has been possible to carry out population studies on the species.
