Orthopaedic neck collar on a woman (winter). This device is worn to treat various forms of neck instability including whiplash, slipped disc, fracture, and other causes of pain in this region. Unlike the other type of soft collar, usually made of foam, this stiff collar is reinforced with plastic. It is also adjustable. By limiting movement of the neck and by transferring some of the weight of the head from neck to chest, it provides pain relief to sufferers of neck injuries. As a secondary role, it provides local warmth to the affected region. This winter collar is fully enclosed around the neck, but in summer can have openings for ventilation.
