Wright's book of poultry, revised and edited in accordance with the latest poultry club standards. ground-colour of the feathers beingdark brown nearly as dark as roasted coffee, covered over with very small and minute pencil-ling, too close to be distinguishable as bands, and almost black. The feathers of such a henare shown in Fig. 90, and the great differencebetween them and the grouse-marked featherson p. 247 will be observed. These feathers veryoften show a little white in the shaft, which doesnot matter much ; and altogether it is veryobvious that this strain contains more than theother of the older Partridge blood. The entirebird is very dark and dull looking, and thecushion feathers are often almost dull black, except for a narrow lacing of the brown ground ;birds without that lacing breed cockerels notbright enough. It does not of course follow thatall dark and dull-looking hens like this willbreed exhibition cockerels ; but if they are thenext relatives of such, and therefore of theright blood, there will be little disappointmentafter the strain has been bred a year or two,. BLACK COCHINS. 249 The hackles of these hens should be deep red-dish orange, with a broad and dense black striperesembling c in Fig. 88. These dark hens are often of noble andmassive proportions, and hence the males ofthis variety are at present often better than thefemales, which, since the last Brahma cross forpencilling, have too often been small and was very striking, until the older style ofmarking had died out, to see the two side byside, and mark the grandeur of the older typecompared with the modern. The increase ofsize and Cochin shape in the exhibition femalesis the most pressing desideratum in PartridgeCochin breeding, and much might be done byselecting the finest birds, and systematic feeding tridgcs and Whites in size and form, andawakened quite a new interest in this varietyamongst Cochin breeders. For their slow pro-gress in early years there were several reasons
