TELEGONY AND REVERSION. 83 the majority of the light bands in this filly, there wereprobably at least twenty-four cervical stripes between theoccipital crest and the shoulder stripe in the ancestors ofthe zebras. In the Somali zebra there are sometimesfourteen cervical stripes extending into the mane, butjudging by the width of some of them a considerableamount of blending has evidently taken place. A careful examination of the hind quarters of theSomali zebra reveals the fact that there is a stripe which Fig. Young Burchells Zebra with sliadow stripes. has nearly the same relation to the hip-joint as the shoulderstripe has to the shoulder-joint. This, the crouj) stripe(Fig. 24, ) (which typically consists of two stripes), alsowhen single bifurcates; one limb running backwards acrossthe hind quarters, the other forwards to unite with thefirst of a series of distinct stripes which arch across thehind quarters, and may be known as the femoral stripes 84 TELEQONY AND EEVERSION. (Fig. 24, ). Between the shoulder and croup stripesin the skin figured (Fig. 24) there are twenty-five stripesrunning at nearly right angles to the dorsal stripe. Butas four of these are more or less forked at their origin, thetwenty-five probably represent at least twenty-nine vertical Fig. 26.
