Artist's impression of the Einstein Observatory astronomical satellite (HEAO-2) in orbit. The satellite was equipped with two highly sensitive X-ray telescopes. Standing 5. 8 metres high, the 3-tonne satellite was launched in 1978 and failed in 1981, after a two-and-a-half year life in which it revolutionised X- ray astronomy.
