A street view of Rotterdam in 1955 – this was photographed looking south with people walking down Coolsingel at the intersection with Beursplein. Beursplein is now pedestrianised with a shopping mall and metro station below ground level. A C&A clothing department store is on the corner (today greatly modernised) – a vintage 1950s photograph.

Rotterdam is a major port city in the province of South Holland. After being almost completely reconstructed following World War II, the city is now known for its modern architecture, as well as its university, riverside setting, cultural activity and maritime heritage. This image is from a visitor’s old amateur black and white negative. It will look soft and grainy if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
