Berlin, an der Mauer Garten,Tree-House at the wall. Vegetable Garden & house built from recycled, reclaimed materials by Osman Kalin
The Mauer Garten was established in Berlin in the pre-unification era by Osman He spotted the vacant piece of land from his apartment window in Kreuzberg. The land was officially East German Property but was situated on the West German side of the wall. The enterprsing retiree cleared the land and established a garden where he grew fruit and vegetables. His efforts were opposed by both East & West bureaucrats but he stood firm and built a shack out of recycled materials. Today the double-storey, two bedroomed house has a veranda with views onto the church. The Church owns the land but allowed Kalin to stay. The Baumhaus (tree house) is no longer his main residence but he is often be seen in the shady garden.
