In this absorption, Massa-chusetts was acting within the terms of her first charter. Thischarter provided for the control of territory three miles north ofthe Merrimac, which was at first supposed to flow east and westthroughout its length. But as the source of the river is far tothe north of its mouth, the original charter boundaries includedthe settlements that had been made in New Hampshire and PURITAN COSTUMES 62 VIRGINIA AND NEW ENGLAND Massachusetts located the source of the Merrimac while the Stuartkings gave out other charters in entire ignorance of American geog-raphy. Massachusetts had paid £1200 to the heirs of Gorges, thefounder of Maine, for their rights.
