The new converts were not slow in acting upon the sug-gestions of Peter Becker to arrange their own affairs; thetwelve persons, six brothers and six sisters, proceededforthwith to form themselves into a regular Baptist con-gregation. This became known as the Conestoga Churchor Gemeinde. It consisted of Conrad Beissel, JosephSchaffer, Johannes Meyer, Henrich Hohn, Sigmund Lan-dert and Jonadab ; Sisters Migtonia, Christina, Veronica[Friedrichs], Maria, Elizabeth and Franzina. Beissel wasby common consent acknowledged as the leader of thenew congregation. It may be well at this point to define what is meant bya love-feast or Liebesmahl among the German BaptistBrethren, as it differs materially from what is understoodby a love-feast among other denominations. With theMoravians and others it is a symbolical service, at whichcoffee or chocolate and a small cake or bunn are served inchurch during the singing of hymns and the reading ofsuitable selections from Scripture. With the Brethren thelove-feast is patterned after that of the early Christianchurch, being a regular full meal, partaken in silence be-fore the communion, similar to the supper eaten by Christand the Apostles, and it serves as an introduction to themore solemn part of the evenings service.
