An American history . The Red Ensign, which was the com-mercial flag of the British Empire in 1775,consisted of a red field, a blue canton, thered cross of St. George, and the white crossof St. Andrew. From this flag was derivedthe phrase the red, white, and The American Whigs, in 1775, laid six whitestripes on the red field of the ensign, thusproducing the thirteen stripes that repre-sent the colonies. The canton was re-tained to represent the empire.
