Its mission was to support the attack of the FirstDivision and to help in covering the Thirty-ninth French Colonials. While digging gun pits the men of the second battalion had no otherprotection than camouflage nets and enemy aviators soon spotted them. Aplatoon of 150s opened fire after several shots from long-range guns. Thefirst shell fired struck the ammunition dump, killing Sergeant Marion and wounding three other men of Battery D.
