So strong was his desire tofollow the direction of his special gifts thathe turned from the offer of a certain compet-. ence of a farmer, and making his own waythrough college entered his chosen Wagner was born June 0th, 1855, in Jacksontownship, Snyder county, near Kratzerville,where his father, Y. H. Wagner, still resides, hebeing the oldest justice of the peace in Snydercounty, having held his commission since 1862up to the present time. He held the office ofschool director for eleven years and was activein military affairs; before the warhe havingserv-ed as first lieutenant after serving three years asa private in a company of State militia. The Doc-tors mother, whose maiden name was SusannaHelm, was a daughter of that well known pion-eer, Capt. John Hehn. The Doctor attendedschool in Kratzerville, and although his opportun-ities were inferior to those of the present day, hemade such good use of them that before he wassixteen he was prepared to teach, his first schoolbeing in the Brouse school house in his nativetownsh
