A Toddy tapper climbs up a Toddy palm, carrying his basic tool kit and a labu katey’, a round container which is used to collect the toddy at PhilipKutter's farm in the Kerala backwaters of Kottayam, in Kerala State, southern India. The toddy is a sap extracted from a Toddy palm, a native to South and Southeast Asia and is part of the Sugar palm group. Toddy sap is used to produce palm wine, an alcoholic beverage and also distilled and used in local curry dishes.
