A 165 traction unit sat high on the rails over a deep pit in a very long shed which is all well lit and with tooling all around

A long view of the old Train Maintenance Depot () shed at Cow Lane in Reading, showing a unit (165 traction) high up on the rails over a deep pit where engine's transmissions and air conditioning units can all be exchanged from the underside of the train to the fork lift then onto a pallet whereby a new reconditioned unit can be fitted, these works are usually done overnight to avoid removing the unit from traffic during the day. Most of the units heavy items are bolted into place underneath the coaches and are removed piecemeal for a direct replacement making for a speedy turnaround. Lighting in this are and that of the underside pit is maintained at a bright level to avoid accidents. In winter heating is achieved by overhead heaters and lighting is a mix of Halogen and Fluorescent lamps.
