Garlic. Two bulbs of garlic (Allium sativum), the one at left cut to reveal the individual cloves. Garlic is used extensively in cooking, and is an important substance in herbal medicine. The bulbs contain many chemicals, including vitamins A, B and C, and small amounts of insulin. Due to its distinctive odour, many medicinal users prefer to take capsules of distilled garlic oil. The efficacy of garlic as an insect repellent probably led to the popular belief of its use in combatting vampires.
