There were many containing alkaline water, some of them largeenough to be called lakes ; but the water usually held such large quantitiesof salts that animals could not drink it. We were frequently compelled touse water sufficiently alkaline to be altogether disgusting to the taste, andthe best of the fresh water found was full of insect hfe and vegetablematter.
