River system. Artwork showing the course of a river from the mountains down to the sea. At high altitude where the terrain is steeper, the river is narrow and fast flowing, carving steep valleys. As it reaches more level ground, it widens and begins to meander. Some loops have become isolated, forming ox-bow lakes. As the river nears the sea, its flow slows further and it begins to deposit sediment, forming a delta.
