His first effort, therefore, isto discover, if he can. the governing idea orprincipal purpose of each book, and to that by taking ten or twenty or more in-stances which most strikingly illustrate thesacred writers intention. To get hold of this idea is to get athorough insight into the Book of shown what this dominant idea of abook is, he selects a number of passages fromit which illustrate most strikingly the intentionof the inspired writer. Upon each of these hecomments, and at intervals devotes a few pagesto suggestive thoughts for preachers on the fore-going section. At the close of the study of eachsacred book he presents a panoramic view of thewhole ground which he has previously goneover in detail. This volume deals with the Book of Genesisand is complete in itself, as Dr. Parker promisesthat each succeeding volume shall be. Thewhole work will occupy twenty-five volumes,which will be published at intervals during thenext two years.
