On comparing this early work atCanterbury with other early Norman buildings, it isplain that they all had their ornaments executed in thesame manner : the chisel is only required for deep-cut-ting, and especially under-cutting, and that we do notfind on any buildings of ascertained date before chisel was used for carving in stone in Italy andthe south of France at an earlier period, but not in Nor-mandy or the north of France much earlier
