Rioting in Alexandria

In 1882, Egyptian rebels seized the city of Alexandria. England, whose representatives at the time were controlling the finances, warned them to retire and then, as they refused, bombarded the city. Foreigners had been warned, and most of them had fled. However, some storekeepers and others remained to protect their property. During the bombardment, a frenzied Egyptian mob surged through the city, as this 1906 illustration shows. Many French and English merchants were killed.
