Vignette from the papyrus of Ani showing the funereal chest of Osiris with Ra rising from it with the Ankh or sign of life in each hand. The coffin is surrounded by the four children of Horus, the son of Osiris and Isis. They are Emsta, Hapi, Tuamautef and Kebhsenef and they played an important part in funeral rites. They are associated with the four cardinal points of the compass, north, south, east and west. These were an important feature of ancient Egyptian astronomy and were used to align their monuments.
