On the fire burning itself out in this direc-tion some of the refugees returned, and the scene on Fridaymorning was pitiful in the extreme. Under a blazing sky, theheat of the sun being intensified by the pall of smoke thathung over the city to the east, were seen old men and womenhelplessly and aimlessly carrying bundles hither and with fevered faces and women with babes in arms, trudged through the dust, which lay nearly a foot deep on theroad, and was raised in blinding clouds by the passing ofwagons; this intensified a thirst already strong by reason ofthe unnatural conditions. Fortunately, water in this, as inmost of the outlying suburbs, became available in reasonableamount, though even this was carefully husbanded.
