Map of Queen Nefertari's tomb. Queen Nefertari lived around 1300-1255 BC and was the first wife of the Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II. Her tomb (North is at right) is located in the Valley of the Queens, Thebes, Egypt. From the outside, a narrow set of stairs (grey) leads down to the first level of chambers, which includes the anteroom (yellow), vestibule (orange) and the first east side annexe (brown). A second set of stairs descends onto the main burial chamber (pink) which is annexed by three smaller chambers (blue). The burial chamber contains four pillars (red) surrounding a sunken floor that originally housed Nefertari's mummy. When the tomb was rediscovered in 1904, the mummy and most of the artefacts were absent due to previous looting. The tomb has been closed to the public since 2003.
