Gastritis. Gastroscope view of the stomach wall of a patient with gastritis (inflamed stomach). This patient has AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), and the gastritis was caused by an opportunistic cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The gastritis has caused inflammation and ulceration here, which causes similar symptoms to a gastric ulcer. These include pain in the upper abdomen, nausea and vomiting. CMV infections are extremely common, but are usually only serious in patients with weakened immune systems. AIDS, caused by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), damages the immune system by destroying lymphocyte white blood cells.
