Eightthousand Europeans dwell in the island, and in their shipsis taken the greater part of Chinese commerce. The island itself is beautiful—diversified by mountainpeaks and well supplied with water from hundreds of erners, even for pleasure. It was necessary to deviseother means to attain this end.
