Tomstown was settled and founded by John Toms, about 1820. It is situ-ated about a mile southeast of Quincy at the foot of South Mountain. Ithas a population of 200. Quite a Mormon settlement existed, at one time, inits neighborhood, but most of the saints moved to Utah. Five Forks (formerly Mount Hope) is a small postoffice village on the Cham-bersburg and Waynesboro road, four miles northwest of Waynesboro; has agrist-mill, store, blacksmith shop and a population of about eighty. JAMES ADAMS, engineer, Chanibersburg, was born in Adams County,Penn., October 10, 1810; a son of Ignatius and Mary (Hoffman) Adams. Hewas reared on a farm until eighteen years of age, and received such aneducation as was generally given to farmers sons. He then commenced anapprenticeship at the coopers trade, which he completed at Chambersburg, towhich place he came in the spring of 1829, and remained with his employer,Eobert Stewart, as journeyman for some years; then, in 1835, he engaged inthe same business for himself, and in this he was occupied until 1841 or 1842,when he entered the employ of the Cumberland Valley Railroad, first as strikerin the blacksmith department, and was soon advanced to the position of fire-man on a locomotive.
