Bowel disease in the colon. Endoscopic view of ulcerative colitis and diverticular disease (diverticulosis) affecting the sigmoid colon. Ulcerative colitis is inflammation of the bowel, typically arising in the rectum and often extending to the colon (large intestine). This form of colitis is characterized by deep ulcers. The affected bowel lining becomes haemorrhagic, contributing to diarrhoea and the passing of blood and mucus. Diverticulosis causes sacs (diverticula) to form and protrude externally from the colon wall. These can become inflamed, infected, and may rupture (diverticulitis). Treatment requires antibiotic drugs. More severe cases may require surgery to remove part of the colon.
