Molecular model of methaqualone. Methaqualone is a sedative drug that is similar in effect to barbiturates. Atoms are colour-coded: carbon is turquoise, hydrogen is white, nitrogen is blue and oxygen is red. This drug is a general central nervous system depressant. It was commonly used in the 1970s for the treatment of insomnia, and as a sedative and muscle relaxant. It has also been used illegally as a recreational drug, commonly known as quaaludes or mandrax.
