Cell cytoskeleton, coloured and inverted transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This view shows the cytoskeleton of an epitheial cell from the human colon. The cell has been treated with detergents to remove most of the cell membrane, leaving membrane rafts and the coverings of the microvilli (the finger-like projections). These microfilaments are around 12 nanometres in diameter. Magnification: x220,000 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
