The epitaph written by Bembo on theCounts tomb at Mantua, however, expressly styleshim Bishop of Avila, and the testimony of theEnglish ambassador at the court of Spain appearsconclusive. On February 9, 1529, the Bishop ofWorcester wrote to inform Cardinal Wolsey of thenuncios sudden death, and remarked that theEmperor had given him the Bishopric of Avila onlytwo days before.^ This statement was confirmed byContarini, who wrote from Rome on March 10 thatnews of Baldassare Castigliones death had justarrived from Spain, adding that the Emperor hadappointed
