Shortwave radiation (yellow) from the Sun is able to penetrate the Earth's atmosphere and is absorbed by the Earth, with a small amount reflecting back up into the atmosphere. Longwave radiation (red) emitted by the Earth passes through the atmosphere and escapes, but a large amount is reflected back to Earth by the atmosphere.
