How the Earth is heated. Computer illustration showing the two main mechanisms that help warm the Earth. Shortwave radiation (yellow) from the Sun is able to penetrate the Earth's atmosphere and is absorbed by the Earth, with a small amount reflecting back up into the atmosphere. Longwave radiation (red) emitted by the Earth passes through the atmosphere and escapes, but a large amount is reflected back to Earth by the atmosphere.
