TRESTLES. 179 On page 177 there are quoted the vahies taken from the U. reports on the strength of timber, the tests probablybeino- the most thorough and reliable that were ever made. On page 178 are given the average safe allowable work-in o-unit stresses in pounds per square inch, as recommendedb^^the committee on Strength of Bridge and Trestle Timbers,the work being done under the auspices of the Association ofEailway Superintendents of Bridges and Buildings. The reportwas presented at their fifth annual convention, held in NewOrleans, in October, 1895. 154. Loading. As shown in § 138, the span of trestles isalways small, is generally 14 feet, and is never greater than ISexcept when supported by knee-braces. The greatest load thatwill ever come on any one span will be the concentrated loadingof the drivers of a consolidation locomotive.
