Quality control of cord blood products. A technician uses a cytometer to conduct quality control tests on umbilical cord blood samples in the laboratory of a hospital cell therapy unit. Blood taken from the umbilical cord at birth is a rich source of stem cells. Stem cells are able to undergo differentiation to produce precursors of all the body's specialised cells. Because of this they can be used in medical therapies to help treat various diseases caused by the malfunctioning of the existing cells. Photographed at Hospital Saint-Louis, Paris, France.
