In describing the machine they say: "Each operative has absolute con- .trol of her machine. She may run it at varying spffe^s, and may stop it at any point in an instant. She may even reg- ulate the flow of peas; she may have six in a row or sixty, or may have the traveling 'platform' almost covered. The advantages of this facility of control are ob\'ious: no two samples of peas are pre- cisely alike; the machine must be run at lowest speed with a scantily covered platform for some crops of peas, while the more perfect crops may need but little picking, and can therefore
