American Spawn Co., St Paul, Minn. ?with grubs. If you have land that is badly infested with the grubs and not now occupied by any crops, I would suggest using 1,000 pounds of kainite and 250 pounds of nitrate of soda per acre in spring. This will destroy a large proportion of the grubs. Free liming also acts as a deterrent. Carbmi bisulphide will destroy the grubs if you bore holes fifteen inches apart each way, with a pointed stick, and drop a teaspoonful of the liquid in each hole, immediately covering the holes with soil. To go over a bed con- taining 6,000 square feet in this way would cost $5 or $6 for the carbon. A pound can retails at 25 cents and twenty or thirty cans would be needed to do the job properly. Vaporite is an English preparation, procurable here, which comes in powder form and which kills grubs and worms of all kinds. Carbide can also be used and is quite effective when the soil is damp; this is also excellent for use in rat holes. Slightly moistening it causes the for- mation of a gas, which is quite deadly. C.
