GUIDE TO ITALY Rome—XVII. Hadrians Villa 283 is the Tomb of the PlauUi, datingfrom the timeof the early Empire. The little town on an isolatedhill to the left is Montecelio, withan old castle once belonging to theSavelli. We pass the station of (16 m.)Villa Adriano (see p. 284). Theline now turns to the stationof (17 m.) Regresso, from which itreturns sharply, and climbs groves of olives to thetown of Tivoli, perched on a hill,overlooking the gorge of the Anio. Tivoli (9500), the Tibur of theancients, is thought to have existedas a colony of the Siculi before thefoundation of Rome. It was sub-jugated (380 ) by Camillus, andafterwards joined the league ofLatin towns allied with was a favourite resort forthe wealthy nobles of the Augustanage.
