The danger is ETHER. 205 accentuated in short, thick-necked persons, and in those whothrough inflammatory or other causes suffer from pressure uponthe trachea. In one case of which I have notes, laryngotomywas actually commenced, but fortunately I was able to forceoxygen into the lungs and normal respiration was was then substituted for ether. In this case therewas no evidence before the ether was given to cause suspicionthat it would prove an undesirable anaesthetic. The movementsof respiration do notecase in the condition of laryngeal spasm, whether partial or Fig. 50.—Mouth tube for edentulous cases.
