Annals of surgery . tudinal incision through the peritoneum over the rightureter, and its isolation, above the promontory of the sacrum, were the ureter laterally, a retroperitoneal dissection, largely bj thefinger, but assisted occasionally by the handle of a scalpel, was madetoward the mid-line, penetrating in the layer of connective tissue betweenthe inferior vena cava and aorta posteriorly and the peritoneum anteriorly, until the left ureter was reached and identified. After liberating this fora sufficient distance it was brought across to its fellow, incised, the distalextremity released, and a lateral invagination through a longitudinalincision in the right ureter was made as detailed in Experiments L and the anastomotic area was released and the peritoneal edges of thelongitudinal incision approximated, the entire field of manipulation wasfound to be wholly retroperitoneal. The difficulty of accomplishment wasnot excessive, and the ureters showed no evidence of undue Plate VI.—Retroperitoneal trans-uretero-ureteral anastomosis. Anterior to aorla andvena cava. A tendency for the sound ureter to approach the mid-line is to be noted ; this is due inpart to its new attachment to its fellow, in part to its segmental release from its original distal stump of the left ureter is not shown. Peritoneum has been removed over thekidney, but portrayed transparent over anastomotic area.
