Motor end plate. Light micrograph of a motor end plate nerve connection in skeletal muscle. This is where the motor neurone (nerve cell) ending meets the muscle. A branch of a motor neurone (line starting at top right corner) divides to form a cluster of small terminal boutons (dark, centre left) on the muscle cell surface (long, purple). The junction where each terminal bouton meets the muscle cell is called a synapse. This is where messages are passed to the muscle cell to contract or relax. The messages take the form of chemical neurotransmitters. Magnification: unknown.
