Grey sky view electric lights Cooper Union Building, Cube sculpture, East 8th Street at Lafayette Street, East Village, New York
The trapezium-shaped traffic island, at the centre of Astor Place, is a popular meeting place and skateboarding centre. The island, since 1967, has been the site of Tony Rosenthal's outdoor sculpture 'Alamo', a large black steel cube (sides 8ft long and weighing 820 kg) mounted on one corner and capable of being spun on its vertical axis. The Cooper Union Building, in the background of the view, is the oldest steel-framed building in the USA. It was built in 1859, by railroad owner Peter Cooper, as a free college for the Advancement of Science and Art. An autumn day dark shade view.
