View E of a Celtic ringed linear cross carved on a sandstone rock face at Dunino Den near St Andrews, North East Fife, Scotland, UK. The outline of the cross is similar to freestanding, richly carved C8th examples on the island of Iona made using carpentry techniques with pieces of stone fitted together using mortice-and-tenon joints. The carving is 2m high with a nimbus connecting the arms which have hollows at their intersections (circular armpits). The horizontal arms are impressively long, possibly to indicate metal panel extensions similar to those on St Martin's Cross, Iona. The carving would seem to be genuinely of Early Medieval date, possibly an attempt to Christianize a powerful pagan place used by Druids & as an inauguration site for Pictish kings.
