Hat & Beaver Building, London, United Kingdom. Architect: Sturgis Associates LLP, 2012. Exterior detail of Beaver building.

The Hat Factory apartments will see the reshaping of two Victorian factory buildings of historical significance - the Hat Factory and the adjoining Beaver Building - fusing the heritage of the past in eight stylish loft-style apartments right at the heart of London's vibrant West End. Henry Heath was one of London's best-known hatters, employing more than seventy people to produce hand-made headwear and earning a warrant as 'Hat Manufacturer to King Alphonso and the Royal Court of Spain'. Top hats and trilbies may not be essential items for a man about town any more, but the Hat Factory building makes just as fashionable a statement. Behind the 1880s façade is a large open floorplan with huge windows that ensured the hat makers could make the most of the natural sunlight; today they define a spectacular series of living spaces.
