The Black Duck (Anas rubripcs), although closelyallied to the Mallard, does not share its domestic is shy and secretive, and although many attempts havebeen made to rear it on a large scale, there has as yet beenno notable success. The Pintail (Dafila acuta), Bald pate (Mareca amer-icana) and Shoveller {Spatula clypcata) are other nativeAmerican species (the first and last are found in the OldWorld as well) which are attractive for their ornamentalvalue. All are hardy and easily kept, and all have beenbred in captivity on occasion.
