The late C. F. Huths highly important col-lection of modern pictures and drawings (July6th) was evidently made with great good tasteand excellent judgment. Nearly all the draw-ings were in perfect condition, having been chieflypurchased direct from the artists and kept in port-folio ever since. The artists represented were , David Cox, Birket Foster, W. Hunt, J. HOPPNER,PORTRAIT OF MASTP:R RUSSELL. From Lord Northbrooks collection ; James Price sale (p. 259. MR. C. F. HUTHs collection. 263 J. Linnell, J. M. W. Turner, P. De Wint, andothers. Of the drawings, it must suffice to saythat they sold very well indeed. The great pictureof the sale was an unsurpassed example of Con-stable, a view of Stratford Mill on the Stour, notfar from Bergholt. It was purchased from theartist by his friend, Archdeacon Fraser, of Salisbury, for 100 guineas ; it was painted in 1820, andappeared at the Academy of that year, and at theBritish Institution five years later. It is wellknown through the engraving by Lucas, andbecame Mr. Huths property for about ;!i6oo somethirty-five years ago, and now found a readypurchaser at 8,500 guineas. Mr. Huth had greatfaith in Morlands work, and he purchased somegood examples at a time when the tide of fashionhad not yet turned towards the quiet domesticpictures of this artist. The choicest specimen wasthe refined and beautiful Visit to the Child atNurse, 24
